One-to-one Note Taking Technique

At NECC 2007 I learned a great deal. I learned about project-based learning. I learned about the application of constructivist principles in one-to-one programs. This list could go on.

I also learned that LIVE BLOGGING is extremely difficult. I get bogged down in recording and often lose the message or miss important points.

Then I witnessed a technique that is very handy for the session participant. It's also very scary for the unsuspecting teacher or presenter.

Here it is... in Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac OS X you can record the session within your document. Here's how it's done:
  1. Open Microsoft Word and a new document.
  2. Switch to Notebook Layout using the VIEW menu.
  3. Display the Audio Notes toolbar using the VIEW | TOOLBARS menu.
Recording a session or parts of a session in conjunction with important notes is as easy as clicking the RECORD button.

Also note that the audio can be exported and edited into a podcast... with appropriate permission of course.

I learned this technique from a gentleman in the Open Source lab. I didn't catch his name but he was VERY willing to guide me as I looked over his shoulder. If you're out there, Mr. Helpful, please comment so I can attribute this tip appropriately.

How do you think your teachers will react given that their instruction can be recorded so easily? Would you share this technique with your students? How would you respond if a student asked to record your lesson for later reference? For sharing?

Those who know me know how I feel about M$. But this is a nice feature that records my written notes and audio notes together.
